SEO in South Africa is usually sold as a monthly service, and what it costs depends on how much work is done each month and how hard the searches are to win. Link building, which secures links to your site from trusted publications, is often priced on its own because it carries publishing fees and weeks of outreach that a monthly fee does not cover.
What a monthly SEO fee pays for
A monthly fee pays for work on and around your own website. Research into the words your customers actually type. Technical fixes so Google can find, read and trust every page. New pages and articles written around those searches. Local SEO, so the business appears in the map results when someone nearby searches. And, increasingly, setting the site up so AI tools such as ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews can understand the business and cite it.
The work builds on itself. It commonly takes around four to six months before meaningful results become visible, which is why SEO is sold as an ongoing service rather than a single project.
Why prices vary so much
Of nine South African agencies that publish their SEO prices, checked on 24 September 2026, entry packages ran from R1,070 to R15,000 a month, and the largest packages from R4,740 to R50,000.
The difference is scope. A package for one town and a handful of search terms needs far less work each month than one competing nationally for terms every agency in the country wants. The number of new pages and articles each month moves the price, and so does how far behind the site starts.
The larger packages are also where link building usually appears. In entry packages it is often limited to business directory listings, or left out altogether.
What a high-authority link is
A link from another website to yours works like a recommendation. Google says one of the factors it uses to judge quality is whether “other prominent websites link or refer to the content”.
A high-authority link comes from a site Google already trusts: a national news site, a business publication or a respected industry title. Directory listings help people find a business, but anyone can join a directory, so a listing carries little of that trust.
Where the links come from, and what publications charge
High-authority links are secured through digital PR: finding a story, a piece of data or an expert view in the business that an editor wants to run, and pitching it to the right publication. In South Africa the publications fall into a few kinds.
- National news and business titles. Arena Holdings, which publishes TimesLIVE, Business Day, Sowetan and the Sunday Times, lists a sponsored content package at R34,000 excluding VAT.
- Consumer and trade magazines. SA Home Owner charges R15,000 excluding VAT for a sponsored online article with a Facebook post.
- Industry newsrooms. Bizcommunity publishes a once-off press release for R2,500 excluding VAT.
- Specialist sites in the client’s field. Home-Dzine charges R4,000 once-off for a feature page.
Editorial coverage carries no fee but takes the most work to win. Paid placements cost money and still need a story worth publishing. Either way, each link is its own piece of work, which is why it is priced per client and often per link, and kept apart from the monthly fee.

Frequently asked questions
How much does SEO cost per month in South Africa?
When we checked nine South African agencies that publish their prices on 24 September 2026, packages started at R1,070 a month and reached R50,000. Most of the difference is scope: how many searches, how competitive they are, and how much new content is written each month. Our SEO service is from R6,000 a month.
Is link building included in SEO packages?
Sometimes, in part. Entry packages often cover business directory listings only. Links from national or industry publications usually cost extra, because many publications charge a fee and each link takes its own outreach. We quote link building separately, per client or per link.
What is digital PR?
Digital PR is getting a business mentioned and linked in online publications by giving editors something worth publishing: a story, a piece of data or an expert view. It is the main way high-authority links are secured.
How long does SEO take to work?
